Identifying Authentic Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup is a healthy, skin-friendly alternative to traditional makeup. Mineral makeup not only provides superior coverage and is easy to use, but is also chemical free, UV protective, non-comedogenic, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Many makeup brands are now marketing products they call mineral makeup, but they do not utilize authentic minerals in their formulation. The original definition of mineral makeup is a makeup that eliminates talc, potential skin irritants, and comedogenic ingredients. Since there's no regulation that controls when or how a product is labeled as being "mineral makeup", it's important to understand what makes for an effective mineral makeup product. Products that contain some percentage of minerals may be marketed as mineral makeup, even though they might also contain a lot of synthetic ingredients - ones that you may not want on your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Authentic mineral powders are primarily comprised of combinations of titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), iron

oxides, mica, bismuth oxychloride (BiOCL) or Boron nitrate (BN). Look at the ingredients listing of the product before you buy it. In true mineral make up the minerals will appear at the top of the ingredients list because ingredients must be listed in descending order of volume.

Unfortunately, the most common ingredient in traditional makeup is talc and it is about 70% to 90% of the formula. The dilution of actual mineral pigments in talc diminishes their benefits. Talc absorbs light making the skin appear grey, dull and lifeless. It penetrates and clogs pores and requires frequent reapplication. Authentic mineral makeup does not penetrate the skin but rather sits on the surface of the skin allowing it to breathe and function normally.
